The One True King

It is Good Friday, friends. Almost ten years ago, i wondered what it may have been like to witness Jesus Christ’s excursion up to calvary and his death on the cross. What was it like to look upon His face? What would we see amongst the crowds that day? After giving it some thought, I decided to express my wonder by writing "The One True King."

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities;
upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:4-6)

The One True King

Not everything
is what I thought it’d be
I thought that all would listen
to what He said
every word of wisdom
I thought that He would sit
on His grand throne
ruling from afar
His glorious kingdom.

Yet, I watched
the exact opposite
happen
with my own eyes
The entire crowd turned
against Him
and sent Him out
to be crucified.

I never imagined this was where I would see
God’s perfect Son
At the soldier’s orders
He struggled to hold up the
heavy
wooden
cross
slowly beginning to
move
on.

He stumbled to the ground in agony
and threw it to the floor
I broke away
from the crowd
and ran to my King
as my eyes filled with tears
I cried out,
“Lord, please!”
He glanced at me
with His soft, loving eyes
and said,
“My child,
don’t weep for Me.”

I was pulled back into the crowd
They led Him
to that dreaded hill
of death and loss
They hammered His hands
and heels to the cross
Each nail pierced through His flesh
something a king should
never
have to sustain.
My stomach twisted
as I listened to Him
scream and cry out
in despair and pain.

Hours went by
The sky grew dark
Thunder and lightning
burst through the clouds
I painfully watched
as He grew weak
He was
gasping to breathe.

With one loud cry
He gave His last
and set His spirit free
My heart sank as I arose
and walked onward toward home
I took one last look at Calvary
as tears started to flow down my cheeks
This is how they treated the chosen one
Who healed all
and set the captive free
They crucified Jesus Christ
the Messiah
The One True King.

I hope this poem today has brought you to reflection, and gratitude for what Christ has done for us and the price He paid for our salvation.
